The Busy Man's Workout: Part I of II
by Jay Salvati

The busy man's workout is something that many trainers will avoid talking about.

Many trainers still believe that workouts lasting at least 45 minutes to an hour are needed to get real results. However, I KNOW for a fact that 30 minute workouts can be extremely efficient and successful for both gaining muscle mass and losing stubborn belly fat.

As I mentioned in my last article covering the busy man's workout, today's man is over-worked and underpaid. The ability to have consistent, sweat-pouring workouts that don't take time away from enhancing your job or business are key.

Also important, these workouts need to excite the nervous system and leave you with MORE energy for your day rather than drain your energy resources. For these reasons, fast workouts work better for businessmen...END OF STORY!

Now, if you are going to seriously approach this goal of getting six pack abs with the busy man's workout, you first have to get your blueprint. You have to start somewhere, and today we are going to discuss how to get the momentum required.

I will cover 5 main steps that will ensure your success. I really mean this. I expect you to come back to this page over and over to rekindle the fire required to attain your physique dreams.

So, with that kept in mind, you may want to grab a pen and paper or take notes on your Blackberry / PDA about this article. Let's jump in...

1. how much time can you invest?

It is essential that you make an honest, daily time commitment to your goal. This goes beyond fitness...this is basic goal setting theory. We want to include daily investments towards building our physique into our schedule so often that it becomes impossible to fail.

In this case, it's going to come down to daily 20-30 minute workouts. Is this possible for you? I can make a confident bet that it is.

Think about it. In terms of your daily schedule, you are wasting 20 minutes somewhere that could instead be directed toward your health and fitness goals. In fact, I am willing to bet that you could give twice that amount of time for this worthy goal.

If you were to take an inventory of your daily activities, you will find that you are wasting a great deal of time every single day. I know...it's hard to believe, but it's true for everyone, so you are not alone.

The goal with taking inventory of your time is the same as it is for any successful business. Could you imagine Wal-Mart ignoring their vast inventory database? Of course not! Taking inventory of assets (time is the best asset) is an absolute success key.

Truly, your time is your most precious asset. Don't settle for merely scheduling each hour of your day. In addition to scheduling your day, take a quick 5 minutes everyday to run through an inventory of what you actually did with your time and how efficiently you used each of your scheduled appointments.

It's only after you have taken proper inventory that you will be able to sit down and formulate a successful fitness plan for yourself. This step is crucial to transforming you from where you are currently at to the physique you desire.

As an added benefit, you will notice that you will start to become more efficient throughout your days if you know that you have to make time for your workout. You will be more motivated to complete your scheduled tasks to make room for your most important client...yourself.

2. develop a short-term physique goal

I have a question for you. Can you visualize the body you desire? Can you see yourself stepping on your scale and attaining that first 20lbs. in weight loss? If not, we have some work to do.

I'd like you to develop what I call a "short-term physique goal". This goal should be 100% attainable. For example, a 2-5lb. weight loss would be a great short-term physique goal for someone looking to lose that belly fat.

You can choose any goal you want. We just need a measurable achievement that will: a) get you started in the right direction, and b) give you the feeling of accomplishment after you succeed with your goal.

It's important to develop that feeling of accomplishment with your short-term physique goal because this energy will compound and develop further results down the road. For a beginner, momentum can be the ultimate boost toward your physique goals.

It's also important to note that your fastest results will come about when you first start to workout. Therefore, be certain to set a goal that is on the higher end of your capabilities, yet still achievable.

Your short-term physique goal will be constantly changing and very dynamic in nature. Let me explain...

If you set a goal of dropping 2 lbs. every week (totally possible), you will have to keep adjusting that goal with every week that passes. If you get the 2 lb. drop great! If you only lose 1 lb., or possibly gain some weight, then stick to the goal of losing the original 2 lbs. until you hit the target weight you first selected.

When you make a promise to yourself, be sure to follow through with it. This will teach you to stick to your convictions when they are worthy of doing so.

3. the right mindset

The mindset with which you approach your goal has a great deal to do with the end result of that goal. In fact, sometimes the mindset is the sole influence to the outcome of the event.

Take chess for example. Chess is largely a battle of strategy, yet many people disregard the confidence required to be a great chess player. In fact, this type of confidence is important for anyone wanting to make a great attempt at any goal.

However, I use chess as an example because it has few outside elements that could effect the results. It's one of the rare examples that is almost completely dependent on a single skill...the ability to analyze moves ahead of time and counter your opponents moves.

Yet, even if we draw reference to other matters, we can see that confidence is always accompanied by some form of success. Think of the people in your life that are successful. How confident are they in their area of success?

I am willing to bet that the few examples you can find where this parallel does not ring true are very rare indeed. The question we need to examine is, "which came first"? Did the confidence precede success, or did the confidence come as a result of the success?

I believe that the confidence required arises well in advance to any success. It's simply too hard to believe that the work ethic required to be successful could be present in a person who doesn't display confidence in themselves and their goals prior to reaching a great milestone.

Therefore, confidence in yourself, your goal, and whatever method you are using to achieve that goal are absolutely key. Also, it's fair to believe that the level of confidence will determine the rate and degree of success. Makes sense right?

Are you starting to see how powerful your mind is? Do you see why visualization and successful thinking can be a weapon?
